The Planets Dance
Beginning on the 14th of March, we will see Venus
and Jupiter dance! In other words, our two brightest planets will be at the
same angle from our point of view as the pass by each other. These events are called planetary
conjunctions and Venus-Jupiter conjunctions happen about thirteen months apart.
This one is special, however. The northern hemisphere will get a good view of
the pair brightly shining for about four hours after the sun sets. The light from the sun shines on to Jupiter, which in turn reflects it over to Venus. The light then bends (from goining through the atmosphere) around Venus causing the it to flicker and Venus to twinkle. The show will be most
impressive on March 15th. At
the end of this week, the two planets will go on their way, continuing their
orbit around the sun.
